La Gervais Farm is one of the biggest in Guernsey with a herd of 150 Guernsey cows grazing the 7,000 vergee farm.

At the head of the hard working team is Dave Cowley, a Guernsey man that left school to pursue a career in farming as a first generation farmer.

He was dedicated in his attempts starting at only 17 years old converting part of his parent's greenhouse and packing shed to house his first cows. Three years later, he bought La Gervaise farm in the lanes of St Saviours when he was 21, expanding the buildings and land ever since.

Dave is passionate about his cows and their welfare, showing a clearly very strong bond with his herd.

He has been President of the Guernsey Farmers Association since 2017 and is particularly proud of the work the farmers do for the island's environment.  The consideration for the environment goes beyond keeping the neighbours happy as he, like all Guernsey Farmers, is responsible for maintaining hedgerows, fields, to maintain or improve biodiversity.

"Elsewhere in the world, farmers need to be modern and resourceful in their management to survive, prosper and meet consumer demands", says Dave

"Guernsey is different. Guernsey farmers are custodians of our countryside"
